Dear followers of this blog,

once again I received a really motivating email from www.knowmia.com.
A small flick of one of my chemical instructions videos made it in their
trailer. I am proud of that. Please take a look and let me tell you some points after you did.

Why do I flip my classroom and record lectures?

• I am tired of repeating the same lectures "live" in my lessons and thereby shredding valuable lesson time.
• Some students need a refresher of what I said and are able to individually access my lectures and even watch them at their own speed by pausing.
• I gain a lot of time to work with individual students during my lessons and I am able to talk to each single one of them, while others follow the lecture or do some practical work.
• The recorded lectures really offer a great way to exchange "guest lectures" from your colleagues in your lessons. e.g. Have you encountered students in chemistry classes that need a fast brush-up of their math skills (logarithm, exponents, etc.). I like my maths colleague for this ...

Crossword Puzzles - A great way to enhance and rate a student's performance

Crossword puzzles - Why they students like them and teachers should like them as well

Crossword puzzles are actually pretty tough checking gadgets and people feel rather challenged by them then threatened, isn't it? Oh, if this would be only true for the everyday school tests - right?

Plus crossword puzzles prove one thing - "the more knowledge you are able to apply, the easier become the follow-up questions", because the filled in answers provide clues to the yet unsolved questions.

They are quite easy to check for correct solutions.

They can be easily marked.

They really make a teacher think of how to ask for a specific desired answer.

Plus: They can be easily produced by your students - if you use the right toys.

In this post, I will introduce three different tools that will produce crossword puzzles for you and your students. 2 are cost free and one is cheap for what it has to offer to your lessons.

For Windows users:

Pros: free, fast, will produce printable and html versions of your puzzles, can be linked in MOODLE, whole classes can work with it - it is free!
Cons: can't be implemented in MOODLE as a rated task (i.e. grading)

Great easy to use tool, it will create crossword puzzles really fast for you.

Pros: low price of just 1.99 US $, easy to use in class with iPads, great tool for students to work with during your lesson

Cons: Cost, puzzles can be just emailed or printed, airprint printer required for direct printing, no online  or digital version of the puzzle can be produced.

For Windows and OS X:
The good old HOT POTATOS http://hotpot.uvic.ca

Pros: available as software for Windows and Java version for OS X, creates files that can be integrated in MOODLE and they can be used as a rated activity and imported into MOODLE quizzes, free - yes, those CWs created with HOTPOT can be used to rate and grade students automatically. Great for fast first round of marks in middle school, because it is free you can make students design CWs for you or their classes

Cons: The printout version of the puzzles needs a makeover with word, before you are able to give them to your students.

So go and try what you get if you use them! Here are my two cents:

• Use them to check the students understanding of a text. Check the keywords with them.
• Make students create crossword puzzles for their class members.
• Use them to rate students' performance - do it digitally in MOODLE - no marking required.
• Excellent for checking glossaries.

Liebe Leser,

eine interessante KOSTENLOSE Tauschbörse für Unterrichtsmaterialien.
Das Funktionsprinzip ist einfach.

• Anmelden.
• Ein kleines Basisguthaben in Form von Punkten bekommen.
• Eigene Unterrichtsmaterialien hochladen und dafür weitere Punkte bekommen.
• Die Materialien werden von einem Team auf Eignung geprüft.
• Verwenden der erworbenen Punkte, um sich selber neue Materialien herunterzuladen.

Wie baue ich meine Stunden auf, damit sie effektiv viele Ansprüche erfüllen.

Gelegentlich bin ich etwas verwirrt - neue Möglichkeiten des Unterrichtens bringen es häufig mit sich, dass ich meine mich entscheiden zu müssen - manchmal fällt es mir jedoch schwer gewohnte Dinge fallen zu lassen.

Als "The Technical Teacher" bin ich der Meinung, dass ich mir im Klaren sein sollte, welches Zweck meine Unterrichtsstunden erfüllen sollen. 

• Ich möchte anschauliche Stunden bieten, die alle Lernkanäle bedienen (lesen, hören, sehen, beobachten, anfassen, etc.). 
• Die Schüler sollen in ihrer eigenen Geschwindigkeit arbeiten können. Gerne auch das häufig verdammte "Vorlernen" durchführen können, aber auch einfach aufholen - ohne dass ich die Schnittstelle zu Vorstoff sein muss.
• Das "Grundvokabular" in Chemie und Biologie soll gesichert werden. Damit meine ich wichtige Formeln, Definitionen, Fachbegriffe und auch Wortfelder zur Sprachförderung.
• Die Arbeitsmaterialien sollen digital vorliegen, aber auch gedruckt werden können.
• Für interessierte Schüler sollen weitere Informationen verfügbar sein - z.B. Links zu anderen Webseiten.
• Medien sollen für die Schüler zur Verfügung stehen. z.B. auf youtube geparkte Filme.

Für die Praxis bedeutet das für mich in etwa folgendem Ablauf münden:

• Stundenanfang: Wiederholung bzw. Abfrage mit Quizlet: Schnell gemacht, ideal zum Lernen für die Schüler, ausdruckbar, in Moodle-Tests importierbar. Sicherung des AFB I

• Die Vermittlung von Stoff anhand ausgewählter Beispiele und Ermittlung von Unterrichtsbeiträgen mit Hilfe von Powerpoints und anderen Medien (Youtube Videos, etc.)
  Bsp: Powerpoint mit Lücken im Text bzw. Leerzeilen für Aufgabenlösungen durch die Schüler - hier verwende ich ein Whitboard als Projektionsfläche. Diese PPT ist als Google Doc in meinen Blog embedded (siehe File - Publish to the web in Google Docs - tolle Entdeckung nebenbei).

• Bearbeitung von Aufgaben durch die Schüler und Verbesserung im Plenum.
• Durchführung von Experimenten mit Unterstützung von Anleitungsvideos.

• Bereitstellen aller Informationen und Medien über Moodle
• Download von Arbeitsblättern für Nachzügler in der Klasse bzw. bei krankheitsbedingtem Fehlen (Beispiel hier: Binnendifferenziertes Arbeitsblatt mit integrierter Deutschförderung im Fachunterricht - Thema Periodensystem der Elemente und Dalton)

Moodle Server and Keeping your Course up to date

I want to be in command of my teaching materials.... :)

• Teaching here and there, doing trainings and a lot of sharing.
• Plus I am designing my lessons and student work materials for dual use in laptop, iPad and conventional pen and book classes.
• Plus my CV tells me that I am quite a bit of a gypsy.
• A lot of my former students want to have access again to my courses, when they have to move somewhere.
• I want to be able to migrate my courses and still have a similar filesystem on my computer with all the materials for my direct access.
• I want to keep my Moodle courses slim and therefore easy to migrate to a new school or server.

I feel that I put too much data an the Moodle server itself - which affects all the points mentioned above.

Well my materials are in dropbox. So why not combining the power of having your files stored in the cloud and teaching in the cloud? :)

What it means exactly is: I am starting to put links in my moodle courses that will bring myself and the students to direct access of my teaching ressources.

Plan for the future - there seems to be a possibility of a deeper implementation: I am not too sure how to handle this yet, but I am sure I need the co-operation of our IT department hence I am not an administrator of our Moodle System. Take a look at those possible ways.

Videos als Anleitungen für Schülerexperimente

Versuchsanleitungen auf Arbeitsblättern

Experimente sind ein wichtiger Teil des modernen Naturwissenschaftsunterrichts. In Chemie und Biologie bin ich extrem dankbar für die Möglichkeit meinen Unterricht um Experimente zu bereichern und meinen Schülern dadurch einen weiteren Lernkanal zu öffnen.

Oft habe ich gemerkt, dass Versuchsbeschreibungen auf meinen Arbeitsblättern eher als Hindernis gesehen werden, denn als nötige Vorarbeit. Was tun?

Eine Lösungsmöglichkeit ist die Experimentvorbereitung als Video zur Verfügung zu stellen.

Hier ein Beispiel aus Klasse 8 - Lösungsreaktionen und Enthalpieänderungen. Die Schüler bekommen über Youtube bzw. Knowmia das Experiment erklärt und eine Versuchsanleitung.

Auf dem Arbeitsblatt selber befindet sich ein QR Code, der beim Abrufen das entsprechende Anleitungsvideo aufruft. Außerdem befindet sich noch ein Link zu einem Quizlet eingebunden, mit dem die Grundbegriffe des Enthalpiebegriffs von den Schülern trainiert werden können.

Resultat: Ich habe bemerkt, dass die Anleitungen dadurch gründlicher befolgt werden.

Die Möglichkeit bei Knowmia direkt ein Arbeitsblatt einzustellen, ist natürlich das Tüpfelchen auf dem i für einen papierlosen Unterricht.

Ich stelle mir bei der Vorbereitung meiner Unterrichtseinheiten folgende Fragen:

• Was muss ich den Schülern nicht unbedingt persönlich vortragen? (VIDEO)
• Welche Dinge kann ich den Schülern besser erklären als sie ihnen in einem Arbeitsblatt vorzustellen? (LESSON mit Medien)
• Wie mache ich die Inhalte einer Stunde für neue Schüler, bei der Vorbereitung auf Klassenarbeiten und zum ständigen Üben immer verfügbar? Auch ohne Heft und Buch! (MOODLE, KNOWMIA)
• Welche Begriffe müssen unbedingt sitzen? (QUIZLET)
• Welche Ergebnisse müssen unbedingt gesichert werden? (TAFELBILD)

Ergebnis: Mehr freie Zeit für individuelle Schülerbetreuung während meines Unterrichts.

Fazit: 1 mal vorbereitet und in der Lehrerkarriere 30 mal nutzbar. Das ist eine Zeitersparnis. Tausch dieser Einheiten im Lehrerteam multipliziert diesen Gewinn.
